1972 Exclosure on Little Whitehorse Creek

This site on Little Whitehorse Creek has been removed from cattle grazing since 1972. The vegetation is now overhanging the stream to provide shade and cool, high quality water for the threatened Lahontan Cutthroat trout.

In 1991, this trout species was found in Willow and Whitehorse Creeks in the Trout Creek Mountains. The US Fish and Wildlife Service had to review the grazing plan developed by the Trout Creek Mountain Working Group to make sure the trout would be protected. They found the plan's management objectives sound and not in need of changes.

The grazing plan calls for two years on and two years off. This short grazing period of a couple month or so allows for more growing season so that the banks have adequate vegetation before the high flows in the following spring. This helps to build banks instead of cutting into them all the time.
