Screw Trap on Bear Creek, a Mattole River tributary, California

At this site, the five foot diameter rotary screw trap captures juvenile downmigrant fish. The timing, size and relative abundance of juvenile Coho, Chinook and Steelhead salmon are recorded and the fish are released back into the creek. This two year monitoring project entails spawning ground surveys in the winter, downstream migrant trapping in the spring, and sampling of aquatic insects in the spring and fall.
